BLACKSBURG – The 44th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will open the ACC slate on Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. against No. 23 Notre Dame. Tech will continue the ACC opening weekend on Sunday, March 8 against No. 2 Duke at 11 a.m.
The Hokies (8-1) are coming off a sweep of St. Bonaventure and UMBC last weekend in a Saturday doubleheader.
Amerigo Contini enters the weekend ranked 49th and has a 7-0 record in the No. 1 this spring. Tech’s 74th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus has posted a 7-1 record, including a 6-1 mark in the No. 2.
Hunter Koontz is undefeated for the Hokies this spring at 7-0 while Florian Nicoud and Edoardo Tessaro are both 6-1. Joao Monteiro and Jai Corbett have tallied records of 5-0 in dual play.
Notre Dame (6-3) is coming off a 4-3 loss to No. 3 Illinois. The Irish claimed the doubles point and picked up wins in the No. 1 and No. 6 singles to tally the points.
Quentin Monaghan, ranked 24th, leads the Irish with a 7-1 record in the No. 1. Josh Hagar is also ranked for the Irish at No. 102 and has a 3-5 mark in duals. Billy Pecor is 5-3 this spring.
In doubles, Pecor has teamed up with Alex Lawson to tally a 5-2 mark in the No. 1 to earn a ranking of seventh in the ITA. Eddy Covalschi and Hagar are No. 19 in the latest standings with a 4-3 record.
Duke (13-1) claimed wins in a doubleheader last weekend, defeating UNCW 7-0 and Charlotte 4-0.
Nicolas Alvarez, ranked eighth, leads the Blue Devils with a 9-1 mark, including 3-0 in the No. 1. The Blue Devils’ 32nd-ranked Jason Tahir is 5-6 this spring while Raphael Hemmeler (No. 99) has a 10-2 record.
Hemmeler and Alvarez have teamed up in the No. 1 doubles for a 6-3 record and a No. 1 ranking.
Following the weekend the Hokies will remain home to host Boston College and Clemson.
