BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee has tabbed Virginia Tech sophomore Amerigo Contini as one of the 64 singles players that will compete in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Georgia, May 21-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Contini, ranked 24th in the ITA standings, will make his second consecutive trip to the NCAA singles event after a strong sophomore outing with the Hokies. Playing in the No. 1 singles for Tech throughout the dual season, Contini has tallied an 18-6 record including a 12-5 mark versus ranked opponents. Contini picked up wins in his last two matches and has won seven of the last 10. He is 25-9 overall on the season including fall tournaments
Contini joins a list of five former Hokies who have appeared in the NCAA singles event in multiple seasons including Oliver Mayo (1996, 1997), Aaron Marchetti (1998, 1999), Andreas Laulund (2003, 2004), Yoann Re (2009, 2010) and Luka Somen (2011, 2012).
Prior to the singles competition, Contini will join his team in Nashville, Tenn. for the Hokies’ eighth consecutive trip to the NCAAs. The 40th-ranked Hokies will face No. 21 Vanderbilt on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. ET in the opening round at Vandy’s Browlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center.
