BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had a strong second day, advancing five in singles and two pairs in doubles at the ITA Atlantic Regionals on Friday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

Tech’s 43rd-ranked Amerigo Contini faced off against Navy’s Austin Jones. The Hokies’ player fell 6-3 in the first set but came back strong, sweeping the next two sets, 6-0, 6-0.

The Hokies’ 66th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus also had a three-set match as he squared off against Rob Stirling of JMU. Bjerrehus fell 6-1 in the opening set, but rallied back to take the next two 6-3, 6-1.

Hunter Koontz downed Longwood’s Dan Elston in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 6-0. The Hokies’ Joao Monteiro also picked up a straight set win, defeating UMBC’s Alex Drean, 6-2, 6-0. Jai Corbett rounds out Tech’s singles winners for day two with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Richmond’s Alex Hahn.

Two rounds of doubles were played on the second day of the ITA Regional event with two Tech pairs advancing to Sunday’s quarterfinal round.

The 17th-ranked pair of Bjerrehus and Contini defeated Radford’s Joe Mills and Javier Waase in the morning round with a score of 8-3. The Hokie duo followed that up with an 8-6 win over Penn State’s Roman Trkulja and Mike Reilly.

Corbett and Nicoud paired up for the Hokies, picking up an injury walkover in their opening match of the day. The duo defeated Liberty’s Dillion Segur and Egon Samaai, 8-6 in the third round match-up.

Sunday’s matches will begin at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinal round of doubles. Two rounds of singles will follow.
