SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fared well on Wednesday afternoon as the Intercollegiate Tennis Associate (ITA) released its 2013 final national and regional standings for both singles and doubles.

Tech was ranked 39th in last week’s final national poll as a team and was picked third in a tough Atlantic Regional just behind 2013 national champions Virginia (1st nationally) and VCU (30th nationally). The Hokies finished the season with a 16-10 overall record, which included the program’s seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Tech had regional record of 4-2.

In singles, freshman Amerigo Contini led the way ranked 67th nationally and sixth in the Atlantic Region. He wrapped up a strong rookie campaign after winning ACC Freshman of the Year accolades as well as being recognized as the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch. Contini finished with a 28-12 overall record, including 16-7 in duals. In addition, Contini earned a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship, becoming the first Tech player to be invited as a freshman.

Joining Contini in the singles standings was fellow freshman, Andreas Bjerrehus at 94th nationally and 11th in the region. Bjerrehus posted a 30-12 record in singles, including 16-8 in duals. He went 7-2 in the No. 1 and was 9-6 in the No. 2 for the Hokies this season.

The two also earned a doubles ranking of 37th in the national standings and was fourth in the region. Contini and Bjerrehus paired up during the season for a 19-9 overall record, going 13-6 in the No. 1. The duo was ranked as high as eighth during the regular season and posted a 5-7 record against ranked opponents.

Sophomore Hunter Koontz earned regional recognition, ranking 19th in singles. Koontz tallied a 25-14 overall record this season with a 13-10 record in duals, including 8-6 at the No. 3. Koontz notched a 3-2 record against regional opponents during duals.

Koontz teamed up with Bjerrehus in doubles during the latter part of the season with the pair going 4-2 and earning a ninth place ranking in the region. Koontz and Bjerrehus were also ranked as high as 80th in the national standings in the final week of the regular season.

This marks the first time since the 2010 season that the Hokies have had two players ranked in the final ITA singles’ standings. The Hokies had three players recognized last season in the region as Luka Somen, Lucas Oliveira and Patrick Daciek were all ranked.
