BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee has added Virginia Tech’s Amerigo Contini as one of the 64 singles players that will compete in the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Illinois, May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill.
Contini will make his first trip to the NCAA singles event after a big rookie season for the Hokies that included winning 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year honors and being named to the All-Conference team. Contini is currently ranked 61st in the latest ITA standings. He has compiled a 28-9 overall record this season including a 16-5 clip in duals playing primarily in the No. 1 and No. 2. Contini is 6-8 this season against nationally ranked opponents.
Contini joins a list of 13 former Hokies who have competed in the NCAA singles tournament. Most recently, Tech was represented by Luka Somen last season.
Prior to the singles competition, Contini will join his team in Lexington, Ky. for its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAAs. The 41st-ranked Hokies will face No. 22 Michigan on Friday, May 10 in the opening round at Kentucky’s Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center. The winner of the match will advance to Saturday’s second round to face the winner of the Kentucky versus Western Michigan match.
