GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech men’s tennis player Amerigo Contini was named the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year. Contini and teammate Andreas Bjerrehus were named to the All-Conference team as announced on Thursday in Greensboro, N.C. by commissioner John Swofford.
Contini posted a 28-9 overall record this season and went 16-5 in duals, playing primarily in the No. 1 and No. 2. The Parma, Italy native tallied a 7-3 record in ACC action. Contini has been ranked in the ITA singles all season and currently sits at a season-high 52nd. In addition, he, along with Bjerrehus, has been ranked all season in doubles with the pair ranked as high as eighth. The duo has an 18-10 overall record with a 13-6 mark in duals at the No. 1.
Bjerrehus has tallied a 29-11 overall record this season. The Aarhus, Denmark native tallied a 15-7 record in duals, splitting time between the No. 1 and No. 2. Bjerrehus has been ranked in the ITA all season and held a season-best 29th ranking. In addition, he, along with Contini, has been ranked all season in doubles with the pair ranked as high as eighth. The duo has an 18-10 overall record with a 13-6 mark in duals at the No. 1.
This marks the first time since the 2010 season that two Hokies have earned All-ACC accolades. Luka Somen and Yoann Re were the last pair recognized during the same season. Somen was also the last Virginia Tech player to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year.
ACC Champion Virginia led all schools with four selections on the All-ACC Team, while Duke and Wake Forest each had three student-athletes on the squad. Clemson, NC State and Virginia Tech each placed two players on the team, and Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina with one selection each.
