No. 52 Hokies defeat No. 30 Florida State, 4-3
Tech wins four singles matches to claim victory

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 52nd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated 30th-ranked Florida State on Sunday afternoon in at ACC match-up at Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State (17-9, 4-6 ACC) picked up the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead over the Hokies (14-8, 6-4 ACC), winning all three doubles matches.

The Seminoles went on top 2-0 with a win in the No. 2 before the Hokies got on the board as 52nd-ranked Amerigo Contini defeated Dominic Cotrone in the No. 1. Contini secured the match in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-1 as Tech cut the FSU lead to 2-1.

Florida State increased its lead to 3-1 with a win in the No. 6. Hunter Koontz followed up with a win in the No. 3 as he defeated Anderson Reed, 6-1, 6-1 to put the score to 3-2 in the match.

Joao Monteiro’s win in the No. 4 knotted the match at 3-3. The Tech freshman had a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Blake Davis.

Senior Lucas Oliveira secured the team win for the Hokies as he outlasted Michael Rinaldi in the No. 5. Oliveira won the first set, 6-2, but Rinaldi won 7-5 in the second. Oliveira rallied in the final set for a 6-4 win.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court this week at the 2013 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship, April 25-28 in Cary, N.C.
