Tech sweeps Coastal Carolina
Bjerrehus and Gomez rally to give Tech the 7-0 win

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 46th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team improved to 3-2 with a 7-0 win over Coastal Carolina Saturday in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Hokies started the day with a quick win of the doubles point. Hunter Koontz and Lucas Oliveira were dominant at No. 2 with an 8-1 win over Coastal’s Matias Di Pasquale and Garik Yedigarian.

Fifteenth-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini stayed undefeated on the season and clinched the doubles point at No. 1 with an 8-3 win over Yusuke Kusuda and Ted Nilsson.

Coastal Carolina rounded out doubles play with a win as Leo Christofides and John Karle defeated Tech’s Mauricio Antun and Marko Lovrinovic 8-6 at No. 3.

The Hokies got out to a quick start in singles play with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win by Koontz over Christofides at No. 4. Antun tallied a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Hunter Whalen.

Contini, ranked 56, clinched the Tech win with his 6-3, 6-0 win in his No. 1 singles debut. Oliveira added to the Hokies’ lead as he won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 over Yedigarian.

After trailing 1-4 in the second set at No. 2, Bjerrehus rallied to win the set and the match 6-4, 7-5. Gomez also rallied for the Hokies at No. 5 to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

The Hokies return to action February 10 at 1 p.m. as they take on Penn State at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
