Tech rolls past No. 63 Miami, 6-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – After sweeping the doubles matches, the No. 51 Virginia Tech men’s tennis team won five singles matches to roll past No. 63 Miami, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
Tech improves to 10-10 overall and 6-4 in the ACC while the Hurricanes fall to 8-11 and 1-9 in the league.

The Hokies swept the doubles matches to get out to the 1-0 lead in the match. Hunter Koontz and Trpimir Kujundzic teamed up in the No. 3 to defeat Victor Mauz and Diego Soto 8-3.

Tech’s 51st-ranked tandem of Luka Somen and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci clinched the point with an 8-6 win in the No. 1 against Wilfredo Gonzalez and Henrique Tsukamoto.

In the No. 3 doubles, Tech’s Patrick Daciek and Lucas Oliveira had an 8-6 win against Omar Aly and Mark Schanerman.

The Hurricanes tied the match at 1-1 with a win in the No. 4, but the Hokies quickly reclaimed the lead with a victory from Mauricio Antun in the No. 5. Antun won the first set, 6-4, but Mauz came back for a 6-1 win in the second set. In the third set Antun answered with a score of 6-2.

Tech extended its lead to 3-1 as Oliveira downed Aly in straight sets in the No. 2 singles with scores of 6-4, 6-4. The Hokies clinched the team win in the No. 3 where Daciek defeated Gonzalez, 7-6(1), 6-3.

Virginia Tech’s 44th-ranked Somen battled against Gabriel Flores in the No. 1 singles. Somen took the opening set 6-4, but Flores held off Somen in the second set for a 7-6(3) win. Somen responded in the final set to claim the match 6-1.

The Hokies’ Kujundzic also went to three sets against Schanerman in the No. 6. After taking the first set, 6-3, Kujundzic faltered in the second with Schanerman picking up the 6-4 decision. Kujundzic sealed the win in the third set, 6-4.

Tech will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, hosting Florida State. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies will recognize seniors Somen, Daciek, Tocci, Jonathan Pine and Zachary Pine.
