No. 34 Tech sweeps final day of Larsen Bowker Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 34 Virginia Tech men’s tennis swept the singles and doubles portion against Davidson College on the final day of the Larsen Bowker Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

In singles action with only two matches going to three sets, the Hokies’ No. 58 Luka Somen cruised past Callum Gee with scores of 6-1, 6-1, while Lucas Oliveira defeated Chris Mark in a three-set 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win in the A flight singles.

In the B flight singles, Mauricio Antun and Corrado Degl’Incerti Tocci both claimed straight-set wins over Joe Schafer (6-3, 6-2) and Nicky Kunz (6-3, 6-4), respectively.

Tech had four wins in the C flight singles. Trpimir Kujundzic, Zachary Pine and Jonathan Pine all recorded straight-set wins, as Kujundzic defeated Ethan Kallick (6-2, 6-1), Zach Pine had a win over Connor Evins (6-3, 6-4) and Jon Pine downed Roger Irigoyen (6-0, 6-0). Marko Lovrinovic went three sets to claim a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Robert Lightbourn to complete the singles sweep.

Somen finished the weekend undefeated naming him the Flight A Champion, while Kujundzic won the most matches in the C flight, earning him the title.

Tech remained flawless in the doubles portion on Sunday, sweeping both flights to finish the Invitational with just nine losses throughout the weekend. No. 51 Somen and Tocci teamed up in the A flight doubles to defeat the Davison pair of Schafer and Gee, 8-3, while Hunter Koontz and Oliveira defeated Mark and Kunz, 8-5.

In the B flight, Antun and Kujundzic had a win over Evins and Kallick (8-4) as the Pine brothers paired up in the B flight for an 8-3 win over Irigoyen and Lightbourn.

The duo of Antun and Kujundzic finished the weekend as the Flight B Doubles Champions.

The Hokies will be back in action at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Ga., Jan. 29 to take on Nebraska at 9 a.m.
