BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team has been selected as one of 74 recipients of the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award. Additionally, the Hokies had seven players named 2011 ITA Scholar-Athletes. Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci, Pedro Graber, Sebastien Jacques, Leonardo Lapentti, Lucas Oliveira, Jonathan Pine and Luka Somen were selected for the honor.

The team award marks the sixth time the men’s program has received the honor, after previously receiving the award in 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Tech led all ACC schools with seven players selected as scholar-athletes. Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) received the honor for the fourth time in his career, while Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) is a three-time winner of the honor. Lapentti (So., Guayaquil, Ecuador), Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia) are second-time recipients. Jacques (Sr., Magog, Quebec, Canada) and Pine (Jr., Vienna, Va.) were named to team for the first time.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2010 and spring 2011).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
