Tech scores three straight to top South Carolina
Hokies have five straight wins for the first time since 2014 season

The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team defeated South Carolina (4-6-1) by a score of 3-2 in Columbia, South Carolina Tuesday night.
The win, Tech’s fifth straight improves the squad’s record to 7-4 on the season.
Marcelo Acuna led the team with six shots, including three on target with his final effort finding the back of the net. In the 88th minute, the senior from San Jose, Costa Rica stepped to the penalty spot and dispatched his eight goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner.
After 45 minutes, the game was still scoreless. Ben Lundgaard made three saves and the Hokies had seven shots but couldn’t find the back of the net.
The Gamecocks got the scoring started in the 52nd minute when Luca Mayr latched onto a pass from Trygve Ellingstad and placed his shot into the near post net in transition.
Tech found an equalizer through Justus Kauppinen in the 63rd minute of the match. The freshman from Finland found space at the back post and headed home a cross from Elias Tamburini. The goal was Kauppinen’s second of the season.
Minutes later, the Hokies took a 2-1 advantage after Kristo Strickler sent home a cross from Marcelo Acuna in front of the net. It was the second straight game the pair had connected to score a goal.
Late on, Marcelo Acuna stepped to the spot to attempt to put the game away. He found the back of the net to give Tech a two-goal advantage.
South Carolina found a second goal 20 seconds from the final whistle from Chandler Corley
The Hokies outshot the Gamecocks 19-13, placing 13 of those shots on frame. Tech also earned more corner kicks (5-4).
Next up
The Hokies return to Thompson Field on Friday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. for an ACC clash with No. 7 Louisville. The match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra, and as always admission is free.
