Lundgaard's eight saves, Verfurth's header not enough for Tech

DURHAM – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team lost 3-1 to Duke on Friday night at Koskinen Stadium to begin ACC play. The loss drops the Hokies’ record to 2-3 on the season.

Duke (4-0-1) started the game on the front foot, registering 11 shots, six on target. Ben Lundgaard came up big for the Hokies again making five saves.

In the 36^th minute, Duke got on the board through Daniele Proch. Brian White put in a cross from the right side of the box and the Blue Devils got a foot on the ball redirecting it towards goal. Lundgaard made an initial save, but the rebound found the right foot of Proch who put home the rebound.

Jon Ingason had the Hokies’ best chance of the half, putting his direct free kick on goal in the 44^th minute right before the half.

After the break, Tech had better possession and found space to get in a few crosses into the box.

Collin Verfurth’s headed goal in the 82^nd minute got the Hokies on the scoreboard. Ingason curled in a cross from the left-hand side of the box and Verfurth was there to head home his second goal of the season.

Forrest White brought a spark into the game with his inclusion in the second half. He offered a shot in the 63^rd minute and saw his corner kick redirected by Ingason towards goal.

The Blue Devils’ two second half goals were both engineered by Brian White. In the 60^th minute, the forward turned in the box and fired home a strike with his left foot. Later he began the move that ended with Suniel Veeraktone slotting home the third goal.

Duke outshot the Hokies 19-6 on the night, while Tech earned more corners (3-1).

Virginia Tech will host the Virginia Cavaliers at Thompson Field on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. It will be Tech’s first chance to play at home in 2017 after playing the opening five games away from home. The matchup with Virginia will be the first contest of the 2017-18 Commonwealth Clash contested each year between the two institutions.

Last year Tech won the Clash for the first time since the competition took its current format in in 2014-15.
