GAME NOTES - Georgetown

BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team kicks off their home campaign on Friday. Tech will host the University of South Florida on Thompson Field at 7 p.m. The Hokies will then travel to No. 24 Georgetown on Monday for a holiday match. The first kick is set for 1 p.m in Washington, D.C.

The Hokies kicked off the season last weekend when they traveled to Columbus for Ohio State’s Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic. Tech walked away with a 2-0-0 record after defeating then No. 18 Ohio State 1-0 in double overtime and Oakland University 3-0.

Transfer Marcelo Acuna was named the player of the Wolstein Classic and the Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week after scoring the game winner against and Buckeyes and tallying one goal against the Golden Grizzlies. Elias Tamburini and Andre Thomas also tallied a goal a piece.

Tech received votes in this week’s NSCAA Coaches’ Poll nearly missing the Top 25. College Soccer News had the Hokies tabbed at No. 25. Thompson Field will be celebrating Tacky Tourist Night with the first 300 fans receiving a tacky Hawaiian lei.

About the Bulls

South Florida comes to Blacksburg with a 0-0-2 record from last weekend. The Bulls hosted Michigan and American which both ended in double overtime draws. USF, ranked No. 19 at the time, finished 0-0 against the Michigan Wolverines and 1-1 against the American Eagles.

The last time these two teams met was in 2010 in Tampa where the Hokies lost 0-2. All-time these two teams are 1-4 with the Bulls having the upper hand.

About the Hoyas

Georgetown is coming off a weekend away at the Akron Classic. The Hoyas went 0-2-0 on their weekend, losing to Akron and West Virginia. Georgetown failed to score any goals, dropping both games 0-1. They will host Maryland at home on Friday night before the Hokies travel to Washington, D.C.

The last time these two teams met was in 2003 in Washington, D.C. where the Hokies lost 1-2 in overtime. This last meeting was a BIG EAST conference matchup. All-time, the Hokies and Hoyas are 1-2.
