CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team fell on the road to Charlotte on Tuesday night, 5-0.

The Hokies and 49ers battled back and forth for the first 30 minutes of the contest but Tech eventually fell behind as Charlotte earned a penalty kick in the 32nd minute and converted to go up 1-0. Due to a red card on the play, the Hokies would be forced to play the remainder of the game with just 10 men. With Charlotte gaining the advantage, Charlotte increased their lead to 3-0 going into halftime.

The Hokies moved to 5-6-3 on the season while Charlotte moves to 6-4-2.

Ben Lundgaard made the start in goal for Tech and made nine saves. Merlin Baus had one shot putting it on frame. Reece Alexander had a shot on goal and Ricardo John also recorded a shot.

The 49ers, a team who reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last year, increased their lead to 4-0 just four minutes into the second half and got their final goal scoring in the 64th minute to make the score 5-0. Charlotte outshot the Hokies 25-3 on the evening and 14-2 in shots on goal.

The Hokies will look to rebound as they host the defending nation champions and No. 21 Virginia on Friday night.
