Hokies hit the road to take on Charlotte

GAME NOTES

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team hits the road on Tuesday night as they take on the Charlotte 49ers.

The last time out, the Hokies were able to pick up their third result against a ranked team this season as they drew 0-0 in double-overtime against No. 7 Notre Dame on Friday night.

Tech was able to record its third shutout in four games as the Hokies also shutout West Virginia and Pittsburgh during that stretch. Defensively, the Hokies have limited opponents this year as only one team has been able to score more than two goals and nine opponents have scored one goal or less.

Offensively, the Hokies are ranked T-49th in the country in shots on goal per game at 6.15. Merlin Baus ranks T-45th in the country in points per contest 1.25 and T-42nd in assists per game at 0.42, respectively. He has a team-high five goals and five assists. He has a team-high total of 15 points in 12 games. Ricardo John is T-17th in shots on goal per game at 1.85 and T-42nd in the nation in shots per game (3.23) as he leads the team with 42 shot attempts.

The Hokies currently are ranked 54th in the NCAA RPI Rankings. The ACC has nine teams in the top 25 and 11 of 12 teams in the top 54 with the only exception being Pittsburgh at 99.

Opponent History...

The Hokies and 49ers will be meeting for the first time since 2000 and the eighth time overall. The teams last met Sept. 24, 2000 at the Puma Soccer Classic in Charlotte, N.C. and tied 0-0. Charlotte is 5-1-1 against the Hokies dating back to their first game against each other in 1986.

About Charlotte...

The 49ers have won two games in a row and three of their last four, with the latest win a 2-0 victory at Florida Atlantic. This is the third ACC team Charlotte has faced this season after also playing Virginia and Clemson.

Charlotte is coming off a season in which they were the Conference USA regular season champions and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to UNC, 2-1 at home.

Kyle Parker leads the team in both goals and points. He has scored five goals and also added one assist to equal 11 points.

Brandt Bronico is T-37th in assists per game at 0.44 and 29th in shots on goal per game with 1.67. He is second on the team in points with 10 but has a team-high four assists to go along with three goals.

Charlotte is ranked 51st in the latest RPI rankings, only three spots in front of the Hokies.

Austin Pack has played every minute of the season between the posts for the 49ers making 25 saves with a .735 save percentage and allowing 0.79 goals per contest.
