Game Notes

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team will hit the road for the for third time in four games as they face in-state foe Virginia Military Institute at 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hokies will begin a two-game road trip that will see them play VMI before heading to Kentucky to face No. 23 Louisville on Friday night. This will also be the third road game out of the last four for the Hokies and after Louisville they will have played four of the last five away from home.

Tech currently ranks fourth in the ACC with 2.0 goals per game. Merlin Baus is second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in points per game at 1.75 and first in assists at 0.75. Ricardo John, Dylan Huber and Baus are all tied for ninth in the ACC in goals and goals per game.

Tech opened ACC play against No. 3 UNC on Friday losing 2-0. It won't be the first ranked team the Hokies will play in conference as the ACC currently has nine teams either in the NSCAA Top 25 or receiving votes. Four of those teams are ranked in the top 10.

Opponent History

Tech boasts a 28-2-1 overall record against VMI in a series dating back to 1972 with Virginia Tech winning the meeting last year 5-0 in Blacksburg. The teams have met each of the last three seasons with the Hokies winning by a combined score of 8-1.

VMI has never posted a shutout against Virginia Tech and the Hokies have won the last 18 meetings overall dating back to 1986. VMI’s wins came in 1982 and 1985 while their lone win in Lexington was a 4-2 victory in 1982.

About VMI...

VMI has lost four straight games to open the season and the team went 1-17-1 last year, finishing six in the Southern Conference.

The Keydets are playing their first home game of the season as they’ve been the away team in every game so far. VMI most recently lost 3-0 to Liberty University on Saturday when they were outshot 21-6. Virginia Tech had an exhibition game with Liberty during preseason.

VMI has only scored one goal so far this season and it came in their opener, a 2-1 loss to Longwood. The Keydets have been outscored 11-1 overall and 9-0 in their last three contests.

Campbell Wood has scored the lone goal for VMI and his second on the team in shots on goal with two. Travis Borkey has a team-high six shots total and a leading three shots on frame. Borkey was their second-leading scorer last season with two goals. Hunter Morgan was the leading goal scorer last season with three and he also returns.

Alex Guerra has started and played every minute in goal making 30 saves for a .732 save percentage giving up 2.75 goals per contest. He was an All-Southern Conference selection last season.
