Tech defeats Binghamton 1-0 in season opener
Mion scores lone goal in victory

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team outshot the Binghamton Bearcats 17-6 en route to a 1-0 win.

“It’s always important to start off on the right foot in the first game of the season and I think that we did that. I was disappointed with our finishing and our decision making in the final third so we have some work to do,” said Brizendine.

The Hokies got off to a quick start when just junior André Thomas made a streaking run down the left side of the field and lofted a ball to the head of redshirt freshman Alessandro Mion to put the Hokies up 1-0 in the 8th minute.

Minutes later senior David Clemens nearly connected a bicycle kick off of a corner but his contact was minimal and the ball went wide of the goal.

Both teams would fail to produce many quality chances for the rest of the first half and Tech went into the break ahead one goal.

The Hokies almost put one in the 48th minute when freshman Brandon Eaton hit a shot that ricocheted off of the Binghamton goalkeeper. Clemens picked up the rebound and hit a shot that went just wide.
Senior Robert Alberti nearly put the Hokies up in the 53rd minute but a Binghamton defender was able to get a foot on the ball at the last second to deflect it off of frame.

Sophomore Daniel Lauretano nearly put one away in the 75th minute when he was sent a lofted ball to break away from the defender. With just the goalkeeper left to beat, Lauretano put it over the net.
The Hokies would produce one last chance in the 80th minute when freshman Leon Ungewickel headed a ball just over the frame.

“It’s good to get a win and we are going to try and clean some things up before we take on a good Fordham team,” Brizendine concluded.

The Hokies are now 1-0 on the season and are set to take on Fordham in the team’s final game of the JMU Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Noon.
