FARMVILLE, Va. -- In a game where offense was at a premium, one goal proved enough to push the Longwood Lancers over the Hokies, 1-0. Virginia Tech is now 3-6-1 on the season.

Only four shots total were taken in the first half, three by Tech. Clarke Bentley nearly put the Hokies ahead in the 20th minute, banging a shot off the post. After much back-and-forth action, Patrick Huang was substituted in and promptly made a scoring bid in the 44th minute with a header that went just high of the net. At the half, the game remained scoreless.

Shot opportunities were in greater supply in the second half for the Hokies, taking seven shots throughout the remaining 45 minutes. Longwood’s Devin Pierce found the net for Longwood’s lone goal in the 70th minute off a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. The Hokies picked up the pace, taking four of their seven second-half shots following the Longwood goal. In the last minute of regulation, Evan Slusser had a shot go just wide of the net with 51 seconds remaining, however it was Greg Cochrane who provided the thrilling finish, with the potential equalizer bouncing off the post with just two seconds remaining.

In total, the Hokies outshot the Lancers, 10-4, and took five corner kicks to Longwood’s three. Offensively, Robert Alberti led Tech with two shots, his 11th and 12th of the season. Jed Prater and John Snyder registered the Hokies’ two shots on goal.

Tech will look for a happy homecoming Friday as it welcomes Maryland to Thompson Field, with the match set to start at 7 p.m.
