CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Virginia Tech Hokies put forth a strong effort in their final regular season game, but couldn’t answer two second half goals from the Boston College Eagles, falling 2-0 at the Newton Campus Complex on Friday night.

The Eagles (11-7, 5-3 ACC), fresh off a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Wake Forest last week, earned five corners in the first 11 minutes of play, but the Tech defense remained strong. Keeper Stefan Caulfield was pivotal as the back line of the defense, earning two crucial saves to keep the Eagles scoreless despite five corners.

The Hokies (5-11-2, 2-6 ACC) put together a string of shots in the middle of the first half. Gregory Cochrane’s attempt went wide, and Dunn followed up with a hard-struck shot that was saved by Eagles’ keeper Justin Luthy. The Eagles’ defense blocked a shot from Clarke Bentley shortly after to hold Tech scoreless through the period.

The first half continued to be evenly matched, as both teams finished the period with five shots each. Edvin Worley earned the final shot of the half for Boston College in the 39th minute, as the teams played a back-and-forth game for the final five minutes. Dunn finished the half with two shots, both of them on goal.

Boston College broke the scoreless tie only three minutes into the second half. The Eagles earned a penalty kick, which set up Kevin Mejia’s fifth goal of the season that gave Boston College a 1-0 advantage. The Eagles then tried building momentum off their goal, following up with four shots that sailed wide. They would later add an insurance goal in the final minute of play to collect a 2-0 win, as Worley collected his fourth score of the season off an assist from Colin Murphy.

James Gilson had a chance to tie the game in the 73rd minute but his shot missed just high. Koen Oost also saw a similar result, with his shot sailing over the crossbar, as the Hokies were unable to counter the Eagles’ goals with any of their own. Tech would earn a corner in the 87th minute but was unable to put anything on the scoreboard.

The Eagles’ held the advantage in shots, 12-7, and in shots on goal, 3-2. Caulfield collected two saves in net.

The Hokies finish their season with a 5-11-2 overall record. They will begin action at the ACC Championships on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Seeding, once determined, will be announced on www.hokiesports.com.
