During the 2017 men’s and women’s soccer seasons, Hokie fans will have the opportunity to earn rewards for their continued support of Virginia Tech soccer. Fans will be handed Soccer Loyalty Cards at the marketing table near the entrance to Thompson Field which will be hole punched for each game attended. Once a fan reaches four games attended, they will receive a Virginia Tech soccer scarf. Fans attending eight games or more will receive a Nike Virginia Tech soccer t-shirt.
Soccer fans will get their first opportunity to earn punches this weekend when the women’s team plays host to two matches. On Friday, the Hokies play the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Tech takes on the Georgia Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
The Hokies remained at No. 23 for the Week of Oct. 24 in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll. Tech did jump up to No. 22 in the week's NCAA RPI ranks.
These rankings come after Virginia Tech went 0-1-1 on the week. Last Tuesday, Tech went to a 0-0 draw with Top 10 team Charlotte and dropped their last road game of the seaosn 0-2 to No. 3 North Carolina.
The team has one more regular season contest against Pittsburgh at home on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
The Virginia Tech men's soccer team dropped a few spots to No. 23 in this week's NSCAA Coaches' Poll. Tech was previously ranked No. 15. Last week the team tied with Wright State 1-1 and dropped an ACC match to No. 10 Syracuse.
The Hokies are currently No. 29 in the NCAA RPI.
The Virginia Tech men's soccer team, lead by head coach Mike Brizendine, was named to the NSCAA 2015-16 Men's Team Academic Award list Thursday. This list consists of 892 soccer teams throughout the nation that have a minimum team GPA of 3.00 for the enitre acadmeic year. This list is broken down to 314 men's teams, 578 women's teams and 222 schools recieving honors for both men's and women's teams.
The Hokies made the list with an overall 3.06 GPA.
The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team hasn’t gone 3-0-0 to begin the season since 2006. It may be the new faces to the team this year or the cohesive team chemistry head coach Mike Brizendine talked about when previewing his squad.
The new faces to the team include Houston Baptist transfer Marcelo Acuna. After scoring the game winning goal against ranked Ohio State in double overtime and a goal against Oakland during the first weekend of the season, Acuna was named Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week, ACC Offensive Player of the Week and HERO of the Week by HERO sports. Acuna leads the team with four goals, eight points and 11 shots.
JUCO transfer Elias Tamburini has also made an immediate impact. Tamburini scored a PK goal against Oakland and continues to defend the back end with his quick feet.
Freshman Burke Bender got his first collegiate goal off of his first collegiate shot Friday night against the Bulls. Another freshman James Kasak, playing in all three games so far, got himself a point off an assist Friday night. Ryan Marcano, after taking a year off and returning to the team, has strengthened the Hokies midfield and adding to the overall offense spark.
The team chemistry is somewhere it hasn’t been in quite some time. In the first three games of the season, Tech has shown that they are an ACC opponent to think about in 2016.
The warm and muggy weather continued way into the night as the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team secured their first win of the season Friday night against No. 18 Ohio State.
For the 90 minutes of regulation play on at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, it was a game of back-and-forth. Both teams switched off who was applying more offensive pressure and who was turning on their defense.
Early on the Buckeyes attacked keeping their possession in Hokie territory. Tech needed the backline to be there; and they showed up.
Redshirt-senior Alessandro Mion and redshirt-freshman Will Mejia gave the defense the energy and strength it needed. Their strength gave junior goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard the support he needed to complete his tenth career shutout.
As the defense stayed strong, it gave the midfield and front line room to move around and make 14 shots, four on goal. Such a physical and aggressive game made relying on the defensive line a priority.
The aggressive play resulted in 30 total fouls and five yellow cards for the night.
The Buckeyes had an early solo breakaway to which Mion slide into to stop it. During that twenty-fourth minute, it became clear to the 1, 979 fans in attendance that the Hokie defense was going to be a force to be reckoned with.
During the second period, the ball found Mejia’s head twice. Mejia’s two chances nearly missed the goal and headed high.
Lundgaard made three saves on the night as many of the Buckeye shots went awry. Ohio State’s accuracy was off all night as Christian Soldat was the only player to get two shots on goal.
As Tech went into double overtime, it was do-or-tie.
Mion sent a long cross into the box from the far left of the field. The ball scored into the crowd of players, pulling the Buckeye goalie, Parker Siegfried, out of the posts. Marcelo Acuna found the ball and headed it in to seal the 1-0 upset against The Ohio State University. Acuna had himself a night during his Hokie debut with five shots and the game-winning goal.
The Hokies are back on Sunday against Oakland at 4 p.m. in Columbus. Tech heads home Sept. 2 to host South Florida at 7 p.m. on Thompson Field.
The first win is always the hardest.
https://twitter.com/OhioStateOnBTN/status/769361919727640576Toronto FC II announced the addition of Ricardo John to their roster on Thursday. Tech soccer alum, John, was signed to a USL contract with the club.
John most recently signed with Central F.C. in April of 2016. Prior to that, John spent two years in Blacksburg. He saw 34 matches, tallying eight goals and three assists for the Hokies.
He was named to Trinidad and Tobago’s U-20 World Cup Qualifying Squad, his native country, and competed with the U-23 National Team as part of Olympic qualifying in the summer of 2015. John competed in the Pan Am Games in Toronto with his country in July 2015.
“We are extremely happy for Ricardo here at Virginia Tech,” said head coach Mike Brizendine. “This is a great opportunity for John to get back into the MLS system. He is a great player and will blossom with Toronto.”
Virginia Tech sophomore Ricardo John has had a busy summer, representing his home country in several high-profile soccer tournaments. The Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago, native first played for the country's U-23 team as it tried to qualify for the 2016 Rio Games and then competed for his country in the Pan Am Games in Toronto.
While the team went winless in the Pan Am Games, he finished the tournament strong with a goal and an assist against Mexico in the team's final match. In the team's final match of the Olympic qualifier, John scored a pair of goals in a 5-0 win over the host Puerto Ricans.
As a freshman, John appeared in 17 matches, earning 13 starts. He garnered third-team All-South Region honors, All-ACC third-team honors and ACC All-Freshmen Team honors. He tied for the team lead in points with 11 (five goals, one assist).
