Hokies finish 11th at General Hackler Championship

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 18-over 882 and finished in 11^th place at the General Hackler Championship on Sunday. The two-day event was played at the par 72, 7,233-yard Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Hokies shot an even-par 288 in Saturday’s morning round and followed that with a 304 in the afternoon round. Tech shot a final round 290 on Sunday.

Mark Lawrence Jr., led the Hokies. The junior from Richmond, Virginia, finished with a 3-under 213 and tied for seventh place. He finished four strokes behind medalist Chris Petefish of Georgia Tech. Two of Lawrence’s three rounds were under par for the weekend.

Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 26^th place at 218 and Tom Crow, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, tied for 53^rd at 225. Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for 64^th at 227 and Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, finished 80^th at 235.

Georgia Tech won the team title, with a 16-under 848, five strokes ahead of runner-up Texas A&M. Virginia was third at 859, Kentucky was fourth at 869, LSU was fifth at 870 and Kent State was sixth at 874. East Carolina was seventh at 875, NC State was eighth at 877, North Florida was ninth at 879 and South Carolina was 10^th at 880, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Liberty was 12^th at 888, Princeton was 13^th at 890, East Tennessee State was 14^th at 893 and host Coastal Carolina was 15^th at 900.

Tech returns to action on Friday, March 23, as it returns to the Furman Intercollegiate. The three-day event will be played at the Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, South Carolina.
