Yates, Lawrence tied for second at State Open

Logan Yates and Mark Lawrence Jr., each shot 2-under 70s and are tied for second place after the opening round of the 2017 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia. The three-round tournament is being played at the par 72, 6,946-yard Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke, Virginia.

Yates, a rising junior from Ruckersville, Virginia and Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia went out in the morning and posted two of the top rounds of the day. They trail leader Ji Soo Park by one stroke. Lawrence and Yates are currently the top two ranked amateurs by the VSGA.

Ian Hildebrand, a rising senior from Purcellville, Virginia, carded a 1-over 73 and is tied for 19th place. Tom Crow, a rising sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, shot a 77 and is tied for 51st place. The four Hokies are among the 72 amateurs in the event. Lawrence was the low amateur last year and tied for second place after falling in a two-hole playoff.

The second round will be played Friday morning. Following the second round, the field will be cut to the low 60 and ties.
