BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech head men’s golf coach Jay Hardwick has announced that Mark Lawrence Jr., will join the Hokies’ team this fall.
Lawrence, a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, transfers to Virginia Tech from Auburn University, where he played as a freshman this past season.
As an amateur golfer, Lawrence was one of the most successful juniors in Virginia State Golf Association history. Lawrence, the three-time VSGA Junior Player of the Year, won the Virginia State Junior Match Play Championship three consecutive years, 2013, 2014 and 2015, joining former Hokie golfer Mikey Moyers as the only golfers to win the Virginia State Junior Match Play title in three consecutive years. He was the runner-up to Virginia Tech’s Maclain Huge in the 2015 Virginia State Amateur and won the 2015 Virginia State Junior Stroke Play Championship. He was a three-time VHSL State High School Champion while playing at Mills Godwin High School in Richmond. Lawrence won the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Amateur Championship and was named the 2014 Student-Athlete of the Year award by the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.
“I watched Mark play throughout his entire junior career and amass the finest junior record in the state since Lanny Wadkins and Curtis Strange,” Hardwick said. “The thing that always impressed me about him was that even when he wasn’t at the top of his game, he was never out of a tournament. I like the way that he interacted with the other players and know he will be a solid teammate. We are delighted to welcome Mark to Virginia Tech and excited to have one of Virginia’s all-time top junior players as a member of the Hokie golf family.”
Lawrence joins three incoming freshman, Tom Crow, the 2014 VSGA Junior Stroke Play champion, Tanner Owens, and international standout Sarit Suwannarut as new team members in the Fall of 2016.
