Hokies finish ninth at VCU Shootout

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Tech posted a three-round total of 21-over-par 885 and finished in ninth place at the Janney VCU Shootout on Tuesday afternoon. This year’s event was played at the par 72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek Course of the Country Club of Virginia.

The Hokies, the three-time defending champion of the tournament, carded a 13-over-par 301 in Tuesday’s final round, The team had posted a 7-over 295 in Monday’s morning round and followed that with a 1-over 289 on Monday afternoon. This was the Hokies’ first tournament of the 2015-16 season.

Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia, playing in his first college tournament, led the Hokies at VCU. He shot 73-72-74 and finished in a tie for 18th place at 3-over-par 219. Tom Harris of Maryland captured medalist honors with a 10-under 206, winning by five strokes.

Drew Johnson, a junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 30th at 222 and Ryan Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, Virginia, tied for 41st at 224. Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 46th place at 225 and Maclain Huge, a senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, finished tied for 54th at 227.

Four Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 58th at 229 and sophomore Dan Woodbury (Upton, Massachusetts) was 62nd at 230. Sophomore Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Virginia) tied for 64th place at 232 and Will Duma, a freshman from Atlanta, Georgia was 83rd at 244. Duma and Fiest were also playing in their first collegiate events.

James Madison won the event with a three-round total of 7-under 857, nine strokes better than East Carolina. UNC Greensboro was third at 869, Iowa State was fourth at 871 and Chattanooga was fifth at 875. Host VCU was sixth at 876 and Radford and Maryland tied for seventh at 884, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Elon and Francis Marion tied for 10th at 888, Old Dominion was 12th at 892 and George Mason was 13th at 924.

The Hokies return to the course next Monday, as they compete in the Primland Invitational at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia
