RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Tech has a two-round total of 8-over-par 584 and is in seventh place at the Janney VCU Shootout on Monday afternoon. This year’s event is being played at the par 72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek Course of the Country Club of Virginia.
The Hokies shot a 7-over 295 in the morning round and followed that with a 1-over 289 in the afternoon. This is the Hokies’ first tournament of the 2015-16 season.
Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia, leads the Hokies at VCU. He shot 73-72 and is at 1-over 145 and is tied for 19th place. Tom Harris of Maryland holds the two-round lead at 9-under 135. This is Yates’ first collegiate event.
Juniors Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) and Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) are tied for 24th place overall at 146. Senior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) and junior Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) are tied for 46th place at 150.
Four Hokies are playing the event as individuals. Blake Fiest, a freshman from Huntersville, North Carolina, is tied for 41st place at 149 and sophomore Dan Woodbury (Upton, Massachusetts) is tied with Huge and Mondy for 46th place at 150. Sophomore Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Virginia) is tied for 62nd place at 153 and Will Duma, a freshman from Atlanta, Georgia is tied for 79th place at 160. Duma and Fiest are also playing in their first collegiate events.
James Madison holds the lead entering the final round, with a total of 9-under 567, nine strokes ahead of second place East Carolina and host VCU. Iowa State and Chattanooga are tied for fourth place at 580 and UNC Greensboro is in sixth at 583, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Radford is eighth at 587, Old Dominion is ninth at 588 and Maryland is 10th at 589. Francis Marion is 11th at 595, Elon is 12th at 598 and George Mason is 13th at 606.
The Hokies, the three-time defending champion in the tournament, will be grouped with Radford and ODU in Tuesday’s final round, which tees off with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
