Hokies open 2015 slate at VCU
Tech looking for Four-peat in Richmond

Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team opens the 2015-16 season on Monday, as they travel to Richmond to participate in the Janney VCU Shootout. The Hokies will be aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive win in the tournament.

This year’s event will be played for the first time at the par 72, 6,927 yard Tuckahoe Creek Course of the Country Club of Virginia. The Tournament had been played at the Hermitage Country Club since 2007, when it moved from the Mattiponi Springs Golf Club.

The 13-team event boasts a field drawn heavily from the Mid-Atlantic region. The Hokies are one of six schools from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Tech is the only ACC school in the field. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on the Tuesday.

Joey Lane, a junior from Great Falls, Virginia, will move up into the No. 1 position for the Hokies. The team co-captain, a fixture in the Tech line-up since the spring semester of his freshman year, was fifth on the team in scoring last season. He finished 37th in last year’s VCU Shootout.

Maclain Huge, a senior co-captain from Lovettesville, Virginia, will play in the second spot for Tech at VCU. Huge, third on the team in scoring last season, is the Hokies’ lone senior on this year’s team. He won the Virginia State Amateur in July and was the runner-up in last year’s VCU Shootout.

The lone newcomer in the Tech line-up in Richmond is Logan Yates, a freshman from Ruckersville, Virginia. Yates will play in the third position in making his collegiate debut.

Playing the fourth position for the Hokies is Ryan Mondy. The junior from Blacksburg saw significant action early last season, and has been in the starting line-up in the opening event of his sophomore and junior season.

Rounding out the starting five for Tech is Drew Johnson. The junior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, was fourth on the team in scoring average last season. He finished 23rd in last season’s VCU Shootout.

The entire Virginia Tech men’s golf team will travel to the Janney VCU Shootout, with four Hokies competing as individuals. Sophomores Ian Hildebrand and Dan Woodbury, along with freshmen Will Duma and Blake Fiest will take the course in Richmond, as Duma and Fiest will be making their collegiate debuts.

Tech won the 2014 event by six strokes over Iowa State for their third consecutive title in the tournament. Huge, who finished in second place, led three Hokies in the top ten. Graduated seniors Trevor Cone (T3rd) and Scott Vincent (T7th) rounded out the top 10 for Tech.
