BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech will once again play a highly-competitive schedule in the 2015-16 season, as they aim for a 10th consecutive NCAA appearance. This season’s slate will feature three new events that will enhance the competition.
“We are very excited that our 2015-16 tournament schedule will feature some of the top events in collegiate golf, as well as taking us to three new events held on some of the nation’s most storied courses,” head coach Jay Hardwick said. “The Wendy’s Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point was the site of two Metro Conference Golf Championships; the General Hackler Intercollegiate at the famed Dunes Golf & Beach Club was the site of the Champions Tour Energizer Championship, as well as the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship; and the Blue Course at Penn State has long been known as one of the top courses in college golf. We are pleased to be included in so many top events, which goes along with our philosophy of playing against the nation’s best.”
The Hokies will begin the season in the VCU Shootout on the Tuckahoe Creek Course of the Country Club of Virginia on Sept. 21-22. Tech has won each of the last three VCU Shootouts, and rising senior Maclain Huge finished second at last season’s event. The tournament moves to CCV this season.
Next, Tech returns to the Primland Invitational at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia on September 28-29. The Hokies finished fourth in the inaugural event last season, which quickly established itself as one of the top fields in the country. On Oct. 9-11, Virginia Tech returns to the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club. The Hokies finished fourth in last season’s event.
Tech returns again this season to the UNCG Bridgestone Invitational on Oct. 25-26 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tech finished second at last year’s tournament.
The first of the three new events on this season’s schedule is the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic, Nov. 1-3 at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Turtle Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. The large field will include many top teams, including ACC foes Georgia Tech and Duke, along with others that earned NCAA berths last season.
The Hokies once again open spring competition at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan on Feb. 21-23. This tournament annually attracts perhaps the top field in all of collegiate golf. Georgia won last year’s Puerto Rico Classic, as Hokie Scott Vincent was the co-medalist in the event.
The second of the new events is the General Hackler Championship, to be played March 12-13 at the famed Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The spring break tournament annually draws a strong field. The Hokies will return to South Carolina March 25-27, to once again compete in the Furman Intercollegiate, a long-time staple of the Tech schedule.
The 3M/Augusta State Invitational April 2-3 will see Tech face another outstanding field. The regular season will end with the third of the new events, the Rutherford Intercollegiate April 16-17. The event, hosted by Penn State, is played on the Blue Course, one of the top on-campus courses in the nation.
The post-season will begin on April 22-24, as Tech will compete in the 63rd Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Golf Championship at the Old North State Golf Club in New London, North Carolina. The Hokies finished sixth in last season’s event, as Hokie Trevor Cone was the co-medalist.
The Hokies will be aiming for their 10th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance in 2016. This year’s sites are the Old Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, hosted by the University of Alabama, The Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona, hosted by the University of Arizona, Blackwolf Run Meadow Valley Course in Kohler, Wisconsin, hosted by the Marquette University, The Championship Course at UNM in Albuquerque, New Mexico, hosted by the University of New Mexico, Karsten Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma, hosted by Oklahoma State University and the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Nashville, Tennessee, hosted by Vanderbilt University. This year’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship will be held at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon, hosted by the University of Oregon.
The Hokies return three starters from last year’s team that advanced to the NCAA Noblesville Regional in Noblesville, Indiana.
