CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia Tech golfer Maclain Huge won the 102nd Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship on Friday afternoon, defeating Mark Lawrence Jr., 4 & 3 in the 36-hole final. The tournament was played at the par 70, 6,718-yard Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Huge, a rising senior from Lovettesville, Virginia, jumped out to a commanding lead in the morning round. He birdied five of the first nine holes to go 5 up at the morning turn. The match remained there until Lawrence, the three-time defending State Junior Amateur champion, birdied the 18th hole to cut Huge’s advantage to 4 up after 18 holes.
In the afternoon session, Huge birdied the par 4, first hole (19th hole of competition) to go 5 up again. Lawrence was able to chop three strokes off the advantage in the next 12 holes, but Huge birdied the 14th (32nd) and 15th (33rd) holes to claim the 4 & 3 victory.
Four of Huge’s five wins in match play during the State Amateur came against players who will be playing collegiate golf this fall, Matthew DiSalvo (Christopher Newport), Adam Ball (VCU), Addison Coll (Ohio State) and Lawrence (Auburn). Huge finished fifth in stroke play competition in the event, but defeated the medalist, Coll, en route to the title. With the win, Huge receives the Schwarzchild Brothers Trophy.
