NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Virginia Tech golfer Scott Vincent shot a 6-under-par 66 in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Noblesville Regional on Friday afternoon. The tournament is being played this week at the par 72, 7,173-yard Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana. The event is hosted by Ball State University.
With the 66, Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, ties the course record and sets a new record for a competitive round at Sagamore. Vincent, who shot a 5-over 77 in the opening round on Thursday, has now moved up into a tie for seventh place at 1-under 143. He trails leader Jonathan Garrick of UCLA by six strokes and is just one stroke out of advancing to the NCAA Championship.
Virginia Tech, which struggled with a 21-over-par 309 on Thursday, improved with a 6-over 294 on Friday and is alone in 11th place. Tech has a total of 27-over 603.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, is in 24th place at 148 and Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, is tied for 43rd place at 152. Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia,is tied for 65th at 161 and Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts, is tied for 72nd place at 169.
SMU posted the only round of par-or-better on Friday, an even-par 288 and holds a 4-stroke lead on first round leader, Colorado. The regional’s top seed, Illinois, is third at 579 UCLA is fourth at 582 and UNLV is fifth at 585. Oregon is sixth at 590, Marquette is seventh at 596, two-time defending national champion Alabama is eighth at 597 and Georgia Southern is ninth at 598. East Carolina is 10th at 599, four strokes ahead of the Hokies, New Mexico State is 12th at 610, Alabama State is 13th at 620 and Pennsylvania is 14th at 627.
The Hokies will tee off from the 10th tee, beginning at 7:55 a.m. on Saturday morning. Tech will be grouped with East Carolina and New Mexico State.
The top five teams and the top individual on a non-advancing team will move on to the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, to be play May 29-June 3 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida. Vincent is currently the second-lowest individual from a team outside the top 5, trailing Jose Pablo Segurola of Xavier by one stroke.
