NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Virginia Tech struggled to a 21-over-par 309 on Thursday and is tied with New Mexico State for 12th place at the 2015 NCAA Noblesville Regional. The tournament is being played this week at the par 72, 7,173-yard Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana. The event is hosted by Ball State University.
Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia is tied for 22nd place individually at 2-over 74. He trails co-leaders Benjamin Baxter of SMU and David Oraee and Jeremy Paul of Colorado by six strokes. Huge played the last 14 holes at 2-under-par.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, shot 75 and is tied for 32nd place and Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, is tied for 46th place at 77. Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts, is tied for 66th at 83 and Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is in 69th place at 84. Woodbury made his NCAA regional debut in today’s round. Huge and Cone each had eagles on the 550 yard, par 5 seventh hole in consecutive groups.
Colorado, which was grouped with the Hokies in the first round, holds the team lead a 11-under 277, eight strokes ahead of top-seed Illinois and SMU. UCLA is fourth at 293 UNLV is fifth at 295, Oregon is sixth at 297 and two-time defending national champion Alabama is seventh at 298. The Hokies’ other playing partner, Georgia Southern is eighth at 301, Alabama State is ninth at 302 and East Carolina and Marquette are tied for 10th at 306, three strokes ahead of the Hokies and Aggies. Pennsylvania is 14th at 322.
The Hokies will tee off from the 10th tee, beginning at 9:50 a.m. Friday morning. Tech will be grouped with Pennsylvania and the five individual competitors in the event.
The top five teams and the top individual on a non-advancing team will move on to the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, to be play May 29-June 3 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida.
