Hokies start strong at ACC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a 4-under-par 284 on Friday afternoon and is tied with Georgia Tech in fourth place at the 2015 ACC Men’s Golf Championship. The tournament is being played this weekend at the par 72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club in New London, North Carolina.

The Hokies, currently ranked 40th in both major rankings, entered the event as the seventh seed. Ten of the 12 teams in the tournament are ranked in the top 50 in the nation, including top-ranked Florida State.

Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, carded at 4-under-par 68 and is tied for second place individually. He and Hank Lebioda of Florida State are one stroke behind Anders Albertson of Georgia Tech. Cone has two consecutive rounds of 68 at the ACC Championship, dating back to last year’s final round 68.

Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, posted a 3-under 69 and is tied for fourth place, two strokes behind Albertson. Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, shot even-par 72 and is tied for 16th. Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge North Carolina, is tied for 35th place at 75 and Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is in 56th place at 80.

Clemson holds the first round lead at 7-under 281, one stroke ahead of top-seed Florida State, two strokes ahead of Virginia and three strokes ahead of the Hokies and Yellow Jackets. Louisville is sixth at 290, North Carolina is seventh at 293, Duke is eighth at 297 and Wake Forest is ninth at 299. Notre Dame, Boston College and NC State are tied for 10th at 303.

The second round will be played on Saturday and the final round is scheduled for Sunday morning, teeing off of both the first and 10th tees. There will be coverage on ESPN3 for the afternoon portion of Saturday and Sunday’s rounds and live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
