NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 35-over-par 875 and tied Michigan State for seventh place at the Yale Spring Invitational. The event was played at the par 70, 6,775-yard Yale Golf Club in New Haven, Connecticut on Saturday and Sunday.
The Hokies opened play on Saturday with an 8-over-par 288 in the first round. Tech shot a 13-over-par 293 in Saturday’s afternoon round. The Hokies shot a 294 in Sunday’s final round.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, posted a three-round total of 2-over 212 and tied for ninth place individually. He finished eight strokes behind medalist Davis Womble of Wake Forest. Cone was the leader after the first round with a 5-under 65. He carded an even-par 70 on Sunday. Wake Forest claimed the top four spots, individually.
Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, tied for 16th at 6-over 216 and Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 45th at 223. Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 53rd at 226 and Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts, tied for 62nd at 229. The Hokies played without top scorer Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, who competed in the RBC Heritage Classic this weekend. Vincent made the cut in his first PGA Tour event.
Wake Forest won the team title with a total of 15-under-par 825, 28 strokes ahead of Clemson, 29 strokes ahead of Virginia and 30 strokes ahead of Duke. Host Yale was fifth at 866 and Harvard was sixth at 867, eight strokes ahead of the Hokies and Spartans. Hartford was ninth at 879, Connecticut was 10th at 881, Towson and Boston College tied 11th at 888 and Brown was 13th at 901.
The Hokies will return to action this weekend at the 2015 ACC Men’s Golf Championship. The three-day event will be played at the Old North State Club in Badin Lake, North Carolina April 24-26.
