NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a two-round total of 21-over-par 581 and is in seventh place entering Sunday’s final round of the Yale Spring Invitational. The event is being played at the par 70, 6,775-yard Yale Golf Club in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Hokies opened play on Saturday with an 8-over-par 288 in the first round. Tech shot a 13-over-par 293 in Saturday’s afternoon round. The afternoon round saw significantly higher scores under windy conditions.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, has a two-round total of 2-over 142 and is tied for 10th place individually. He is six strokes behind leader Davis Womble of Wake Forest. Cone was the leader after the first round with a 5-under 65, before posting a 7-over 77 in the afternoon session.
Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, is tied for 18th at 4-over 144 and Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 37th at 147. Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 48th at 150 and Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts, is tied for 65th at 153. The Hokies are playing without top scorer Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, who is competing in the RBC Heritage Classic this weekend. Vincent made the cut in his first PGA Tour event.
Wake Forest holds the team lead with a total of 6-under-par 554, nine strokes ahead of Clemson and 15 strokes ahead of Virginia. Duke is fourth at 570 and host Yale and Michigan State are tied for fifth at 580, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Harvard is eighth at 582, Hartford and Brown are tied for ninth at 586, Towson is 11th at 590 and Connecticut and Boston College are tied for 12th at 592.
The final round will be played on Sunday morning, with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The Hokies will be grouped with Harvard and Hartford. There is no live scoring for this event.
