AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 12-under-par 852 and finished in seventh place at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The event, hosted by GRU Augusta, was played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.
The Hokies opened play on Saturday with an 8-under-par 280 in the first round and followed that with a 6-under 282 in Saturday’s afternoon round. Tech posted a 2-over-par 290 in Sunday’s final round.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, carded a three-round total of 8-under 208 and tied for sixth place individually. He finished eight strokes behind medalist Lee McCoy of Georgia. Cone posted an even-par 72 on Sunday.
Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, tied for ninth place individually at 209. Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, tied for 35th at 216 at 2-under 142. Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 64th at 226 and Ryan Mondy, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Virginia, tied for 74th at 231. Vincent and Mondy joined Cone with an even-par 72 on Sunday.
New Mexico claimed the team title at 26-under 838, three strokes ahead of Illinois and four strokes ahead of Georgia. Texas was fourth at 844, Houston was fifth at 847 and host GRU Augusta, the former Augusta State, was sixth at 848, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Oklahoma State was eighth at 853, Tennessee was ninth at 860 and Clemson was 10th at 867. Purdue and UCF tied for 11th at 869, Coastal Carolina was 13th at 879, Division II power USC-Aiken was 14th at 889 and Middle Tennessee State was 15th at 896.
The Hokies will stay in Augusta on Sunday night and attend the Monday practice round at The Masters. Tech returns to action on April 18-19, as they compete in the Yale Spring Invitational in New Haven, Connecticut.
