AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a two-round total of 14-under-par 582 and is in fourth place entering Sunday’s final round of the 3M Augusta Invitational. The event, hosted by GRU Augusta, is being played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.
The Hokies opened play on Saturday with an 8-under-par 280 in the first round. Tech shot a 6-under 282 in Saturday’s afternoon round.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, has a two-round total of 8-under 136 and is tied for second place individually. He is one of three players one stroke behind leader Brian Campbell of Illinois. Cone posted identical scores of 4-under 68 in each of Saturday’s two rounds.
Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, is one stroke behind Cone at 137 and is tied for fifth place individually. Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, is tied for 22nd at 2-under 142. Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 54th at 147 and Ryan Mondy, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Virginia, is in 78th at 159. Vincent carded a 5-under 67 in the opening round on Saturday.
New Mexico holds the team lead entering the final round, at 18-under 558, one stroke ahead of Illinois. Host GRU Augusta, the former Augusta State, is third at 561, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Georgia and Texas are tied for fifth at 564, Houston is seventh at 567 and Oklahoma State is eighth at 576. Tennessee is ninth at 577, Clemson is 10th at 578 and UCF, Coastal Carolina and Purdue are tied for 11th at 579. USC-Aiken, currently ranked second in Division II, is 14th at 579 and Middle Tennessee State is 15th at 581.
