Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team travels to Augusta, Georgia to compete in the 3M Augusta Invitational. The event, hosted by GRU Augusta, will be played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.
The Hokies finished third last season in the event. Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, finished in second place a year ago and Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, finished in seventh place.
The tournament annually draws one of the toughest fields in all of collegiate golf and this year is no exception. Eight of 15 teams in the event are currently ranked in the top 50 nationally in the Golfstat.com rankings, including the Hokies, ranked 38th. Second-ranked Texas and fifth-ranked Illinois lead the field, which includes teams that have claimed seven NCAA Championships since 2000. UCF is the defending champion in the tournament.
Vincent will play in the first position for the Hokies. A first-team All-American in 2014, Vincent is currently ranked 67th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 79th in the Golfstat.com rankings. Vincent was the February 2015 ACC Men’s Golfer of the Month after winning the Puerto Rico Classic to open the spring season.
Cone will play in the second position for Tech. A 2015 third-team All-American, Cone is currently ranked 71st by Golfstat.com and 73rd by Golfweek/Sagarin. Cone has three top five finishes and an additional two top 10 finishes in his senior season.
Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, will play third for the Hokies. Huge finished seventh at Mission Inn three weeks ago and had a second-place finish at VCU in the fall. Huge tied for 17th in last year’s event.
Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, returns to the line-up, moving up to the fourth position at Augusta. Johnson has started multiple events this season, including the first two events of the spring slate.
Ryan Mondy, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Virginia, will make his first appearance in the starting five for the Hokies during the spring schedule and will play in the fifth position. Mondy has played in four events this season, including a starting slot in the season opener at Olympia Fields.
There will be a practice round on Friday, followed by 36 holes of play on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
