GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-day total of 24-over-par 888 and finished in eighth place at the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The event was played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club outside of Greenville, South Carolina.
The Hokies opened play on Friday with a 9-over-par 297, but improved to a 1-over-par 289 on Saturday and entered Sunday in eighth place. Tech carded a 14-over-par 302 on Sunday and remained in eighth place.
Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, finished at even-par 216 and tied for 11th place. He was 10 strokes behind medalist Brandon Matthews of Temple.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, tied for 22nd at 219 and Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, tied for 33rd at 222. Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts, tied for 87th at 233 and Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 92nd at 234.
Three Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina and Ryan Mondy, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Virginia, tied for 64th at 227. Ian Hildebrand, a freshman from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 87th place at 233.
Georgia State, which tied the Hokies for the team title last season, claimed this year’s tournament outright, with a three-round total of 6-under-par 858, 16 strokes ahead of runner-up Jacksonville and 17 strokes ahead of third place Jacksonville. Francis Marion and Temple tied for fourth at 876, USC-Aiken was sixth at 877 and Western Carolina was seventh at 887, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Chattanooga was ninth at 891 and Davidson and Akron tied for 10th in the 18-team event, at 892.
The Hokies return to action this coming weekend, as they travel to Augusta, Georgia to compete in the 3M Augusta Invitational. The tournament will be play April 4-5 at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta.
