GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a two-round total of 10-over-par 586 and is in eighth place at the Furman Intercollegiate. The event is being played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club outside of Greenville, South Carolina.
The Hokies open play on Friday with a 9-over-par 297, but improved to a 1-over-par 289 on Saturday. The 289 was the fifth-lowest team round on Saturday.
Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, is at 1-under 143 and is tied for seventh place. He is seven strokes behind individual leader J.T. Poston of Western Carolina.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, and Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia are tied for 20th place at 1-over 145. Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 73rd at 153 and freshman Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts, is tied for 86th at 155. Huge shot a 3-under-par 69 in Saturday’s second round, the low individual round for the Hokies so far in the tournament. The round included an eagle-3 on the 512-yard, par 3 second hole.
Three Hokies are playing the tournament as individuals. Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina is tied for 27th place at 146. Ryan Mondy, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Virginia, is tied for 39th at 147. Ian Hildebrand, a freshman from Purcellville, Virginia, is tied for 86th place at 155.
Georgia State, which tied the Hokies for the team title last season at Furman, has a 6-under-par 570 and holds a five-shot lead over first round leader USC-Aiken. Troy is third at 578, Jacksonville is fourth at 580 and Western Carolina is fifth at 582. Temple is sixth at 584 and Francis Marion is seventh at 585, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Chattanooga is ninth at 590 and Akron rounds out the top 10 of the 18-team event at 594. The host Paladins of Furman are tied with USC Upstate for 11th place at 596.
The final round will take place on Sunday, with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. The Hokies are grouped with Temple, Western Carolina and Francis Marion for the final round. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
