Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will attempt a three-peat at the Furman Intercollegiate this weekend. The event will be played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club outside of Greenville, South Carolina.

Virginia Tech tied Georgia State for the team title last season and won the tournament outright in 2013. Overall, the Hokies have won six times at Furman.

Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, is the defending medalist in the tournament. He won at both Mission Inn and Furman last season, en route to being named the ACC Men’s Golfer of the Month for March 2014. He is one of four Hokies who have won at Furman through the years.

Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play in the first position for the Hokies. He is ranked 53rd nationally in the current Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 77th in Golfstat.com. Vincent won the Puerto Rico Classic to begin the spring season and was second at Mission Inn two weeks ago. Vincent finished seventh at Furman last season.

Defending champion Cone will play in the second spot for Tech. He is ranked 48th by Golfstat.com and 49th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. He was a third-team All-American a year ago. Cone finished third at Mission Inn two weeks ago.

Junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) will play in the third position for the Hokies. He has played in every event in his first two-plus seasons at Tech. He is third on the team in scoring average and finished second at VCU earlier this fall. He finished tied for eighth at Furman last season.

Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is fourth for the Hokies. He played in seven events as a freshman, including the ACC Championship, the NCAA Auburn Regional and the NCAA Championship. He has started every match for the Hokies this season. He had his best finish of the year at Mission Inn, in 16th place.

Dan Woodbury, a freshman from Upton, Massachusetts, will play in the fifth position and make his first appearance in the starting line-up for the Hokies at Furman. Woodbury played two events in the fall as an individual and finished 22nd at UNCG Bridgestone.

Sophomores Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) and Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina), along with freshman Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Virginia) will play at Furman as individuals. Johnson has played in both previous events this spring, while Mondy and Hildebrand are making their spring debuts at Furman.

There was a practice round on Thursday, followed by 18 holes of play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
