HOWEY-IN-THE-Hills, Fla. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 3-under-par 861 and ran away with the team title at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on Sunday afternoon. The event, hosted by George Mason, was played on the par 72, 7,001-yard El Campeón Course at the historic Mission Inn Resort and Spa.
The Hokies, who won last season’s tournament by five strokes, shot a 3-over 291 in the Saturday morning opening round and followed that with a 2-under 286 in the afternoon. Both were the low rounds of each session. On Sunday, the Hokies once again had the low round of the day, a 4-under-284, to close out the victory.
Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, shot a 4-under 212 and finished in second place, two strokes behind medalist Austin Powell of Penn. Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, finished in third place, two strokes behind Vincent. Cone was the defending medalist in the tournament.
Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, finished in seventh place at 1-over 217, giving the Hokies three players in the top seven overall. Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 16th at 222 and Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 61st place at 237.
The Hokies defeated runner-up East Carolina by 22 strokes and third place NC State by 27 strokes. VCU was fourth at 889, Old Dominion was fifth at 892 and Campbell finished sixth at 896. In all, 17 teams competed in the event, along with a non-counting “B” team from Columbia.
Tech returns to the course in two weeks, as they travel to Greenville, South Carolina to compete in the Furman Invitational. The tournament, to be contested March 27-29, will be played on the Furman University Golf Course. The Hokies are the two-time defending champion at Furman.
