Hokies lead at Mission Inn

HOWEY-IN-THE-Hills, Fla. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a two-round total of 1-over-par 577 and holds an 10-stroke lead at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on Saturday afternoon. The event, hosted by George Mason, is being played on the par 72, 7,001-yard El Campeón Course at the historic Mission Inn Resort and Spa.

The Hokies, who won the event last season by five strokes over Texas Tech, shot a 3-over 291 in the morning round and followed that with a 2-under 286 in the afternoon. Both were the low rounds of each session.

Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, leads the Hokies entering the final round. He is tied for third at 2-under 142 and trails leader George Kilgore of Campbell by two stokes.

Teammates Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina and Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, are tied for fifth at 1-over 145. Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 14th at 149 and Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 28th at 152. Cone is the defending medalist in the tournament.

The Hokies hold an 10-stroke lead over second place East Carolina and is 20-strokes ahead of third-place NC State and VCU. ODU is fifth at 598, Penn is sixth at 599 and Campbell and Grand Canyon are tied for seventh at 605. In all, 17 teams are competing in the event.

The event is being played on the El Campeón Course at Mission Inn, one of the oldest and most historic courses in the South. The final round will be played on Sunday morning. Live scoring is available on golfstat.com
