Hokies finish eighth in first event of the spring

RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 13-over-par 877 and finished in eighth place on Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Classic, played on the par-72, 6,902-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

The Hokies opened play on Sunday with a 1-under-par 287, but stumbled to an 12-over-par 300 in Monday’s second round. Tech bounced back with a 2-over 290 in Tuesday’s final round.

Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, who held the individual lead after the first round, carded a final-round 4-under-par 68 and claimed co-medalist honors in the event. He tied Dru Love of Alabama at 7-under-par 209. The duo defeated Billy Kennerly of Clemson by one stroke.

Vincent birdied the seventh hole, his final hole of the day, to claim a share of the title. He shot a bogey-free 18 holes on Tuesday, carding a total of four birdies in the morning. This marks Vincent’s fourth collegiate victory.

Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 30th at 4-over 220. Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, tied for 37th place at 7-over 223. Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, tied for 55th at 228 and Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 58th place at 230.

Georgia won the tournament, leading following each of the three rounds. They carded a three-round total of 12-under 852, seven strokes better than Georgia Tech. Two-time defending national champion Alabama and Oklahoma tied for third at 865, host Purdue was fifth at 867, Clemson was sixth at 873 and Michigan was seventh at 874, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. North Carolina was ninth at 881 NC State was 10th at 888 and UNC Greensboro and East Tennessee State tied for 11th at 889. Minnesota was 12th at 894 and Tulsa and Nebraska tied for 14th at 899. Georgia’s win snapped a four-year run of wins in this event by the Crimson Tide.

The Hokies return to action on March 14 and 15, as they travel to Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida to try and defend their title at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular. The event will be played on the El Campion Course of the Mission Inn Resort. Cone is the defending individual champion in the event.
