Tech in eighth place entering final round in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a two-round total of 11-over-par 587 and is in eighth place at the Puerto Rico Classic, being played this week on the par-72, 6,902-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Hokies opened play on Sunday with a 1-under-par 287, but stumbled to an 12-over-par 300 in Monday’s second round.

Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, who held the individual lead after the first round, is now in eighth place with a 3-under-par 141. He trails leaders Lee McCoy and Sepp Straka of Georgia and Miller Capps of Clemson, who share the lead at 139, by two strokes. Vincent shot a 2-over 74 on Monday.

Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 22nd at 1-over 145. He carded the Hokies’ best round on Monday at even-par 72. Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, is tied for 35th place at 4-over 148. Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, is tied for 64th at 155 and Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 67th place at 156.

Georgia continues to lead the tournament. They have a two-round total of 15-under 561, five strokes better than Georgia Tech. Clemson is third at 576, Oklahoma is fourth at 581 and host Purdue and two-time defending national champion Alabama are tied for fifth at 582. Michigan is in seventh place at 584, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. UNC is ninth at 591, UNC Greensboro and East Tennessee State are tied for 10th at 592 and Minnesota is 12th at 597. Nebraska is 13th at 598, Tulsa is 14th at 600 and North Carolina State is 15th at 602.

The third and final round will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. AST on Tuesday morning. The Hokies are one of five ACC teams competing in the tournament. Alabama is the four-time defending champion in the event. Live scoring for the tournament will be available on BirdieFire.com.
