SAN JUAN, P.R. -- The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot an opening round 1-under-par 287 and is in third place at the Puerto Rico Classic, being played at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, holds the individual lead after the first round. He carded a 5-under-par 67 and has a two-stroke lead on five players, including No. 7 Robby Shelton of Alabama. Vincent fired seven birdies and two bogeys in the round.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, ranked 32nd nationally, is tied for seventh at 2-under-par 70, three strokes behind Vincent. Cone carded three birdies and a bogey on Sunday morning.
Sophomore Joey Lane of Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 22nd, after posting a 1-over 73. Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 53rd at 77 and Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, is tied for 65th at 79.
The event has once again attracted one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf. Georgia has the first round lead at 8-under, 280 and two-time defending national champion Alabama is second at 3-under, 285, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Clemson is fourth at 288, Oklahoma is fifth at 291 and Georgia Tech is sixth at 292. Minnesota, Nebraska and Michigan are tied for seventh at 296 and UNC Greensboro and host Purdue are tied for 10th at 298. East Tennessee State is 12th at 299, North Carolina is 13th at 301, NC State is 14th at 303 and Tulsa is 15th at 304.
The Hokies lead the five ACC teams competing in the tournament. Alabama is the four-time defending champion in the event. Live scoring for the tournament will be available on BirdieFire.com.
