SAN JUAN, P.R. -- The Virginia Tech men’s golf team returns to the course for the spring portion of the 2014-15 schedule this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Classic, to be played at the Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The event, hosted by Purdue, annually attracts one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf.
The field for this year’s event boasts four of the nation’s top 25 teams, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Two-time defending national champion Alabama, No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 11 North Carolina and No. 25 Oklahoma join the 29th-ranked Hokies on the par 72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa’s River Course. Five more teams ranked in the top 50 are also in the 15-team tournament. The Hokies are one of five ACC teams competing in Puerto Rico. Alabama is the four-time defending champion in the event.
Three of the nation’s top 10 individuals are also in the event; No. 2 Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech, No. 3 Lee McCoy of Georgia and the event’s defending champion, No. 7 Robby Shelton of Alabama. Virginia Tech’s Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, is ranked 32nd nationally and Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe is ranked 126th nationally.
Vincent will play in the first position for the Hokies. He tied for 16ht in last year’s Puerto Rico Classic.He had three top-ten finishes during the fall season, highlighted by a second-place showing at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate in the final event of the fall. Vincent was a first-team All-American as a junior.
Cone will play in the second position Tech. A third-team All-American last season, Cone tied with Vincent for 16th place in last season’s Puerto Rico Classic. Tech’s leading scorer in the fall, Cone placed in the top 12 of all five fall events, including a pair of third-place finishes, at the VCU Shootout and the UNCG Bridgestone.
Maclain Huge, a junior from Lovettesville, Virginia, will play in the third position for the Hokies. He is currently ranked 244th nationally and had a fall-best finish of second at VCU. He was 29th in last year in Puerto Rico.
Drew Johnson, a sophomore from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, will play fourth for the Hokies. Johnson was fourth on the team in fall scoring for Tech and played in four of the five team events, with a pair of top 25 finishes.
Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia will play in the fifth position for Tech and will be first off the tee for the team in Puerto Rico on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. AST. Lane played in the ACC and NCAA championships last season as a freshman and competed in all five fall events, as well.
