EL PASO, Texas – Virginia Tech golfer Trevor Cone has a two-round total of even-par 142 and is tied for ninth place with Robbie Shelton of Alabama entering the final round of the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic. Teammate Scott Vincent is 19th in the prestigious collegiate individual event.
The tournament is being played this weekend at the par 71, 6,889- yard El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas. All twenty of the competitors in the tournament were named as All-Americans last season.
Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, carded a 1-over 72 in the morning round, but improved to a 1-under 70 in the afternoon session. He parred two of the last three holes to get to even on the day. Defending champion Gavin Green of New Mexico holds a two-stroke lead over Rico Hoey of Southern California. Green tied a tournament record with a 9-under 62 in the afternoon round and is nine strokes ahead of Cone at 133 entering Sunday’s final round.
Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, carded a 72 in the morning round and a 76 in the afternoon.
Cone and Vincent are the only two ACC players in the event. The final round will be played on Sunday.
