Hokies finish second at UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf posted a three-round total of 3-under-par 861 and finished second at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate on Sunday afternoon. The tournament was played at the 7,245-yard, par 72 Grandover Resort East Course in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Hokies led the tournament after Saturday morning’s opening round, when they carded a 2-under-par 286. Tech bettered that by one stroke in the afternoon round, recording a 3-under-par 285 and was second to North Carolina by three strokes. Tech shot an 2-over-par 290 on Sunday for the second place finish.

Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) carded a three-round total of 9-under 207 and fell one stroke behind Ben Griffin of North Carolina. Vincent shot a 6-under 66 in the first round, the best round of the first round and second-best round of the day. He followed that with a 3-under 69 on Saturday afternoon, before posting an even-par 72 on Sunday.

Fellow senior Trevor Cone (Concord, North Carolina) finished in third place with a 7-under 209. He carded a 4-under 68 on Sunday, tied for the second-best score of the final round. The duo of Cone and Vincent combined for 16-under-par in the tournament.

Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina), playing near his hometown, tied for 22nd overall, at 222. Sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) is tied for 35th at 224 and junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) tied for 48th at 227.

Freshmen Dan Woodbury (Upton, Massachusetts) and Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Virginia) played the event as individuals. Woodbury tied for 22nd at 222 and Hildebrand tied for 64th at 232. Woodbury shot the best round of his young collegiate career with a 2-under 70 in Saturday morning’s opening round.

The Tar Heels captured the team title at 15-under-par 849, 12 strokes ahead of the Hokies and 23 strokes ahead of third place Chattanooga. South Alabama was fourth at 876, Mercer was fifth at 878, VCU was sixth at 882 and Memphis and William & Mary tied for seventh at 884. Host UNC Greensboro was ninth at 889, Georgia State was 10th at 893, Purdue was 11th at 896, Marquette was 12th at 902 and Notre Dame finished 13th at 903.

This was the final event of the fall for the Hokies. They will return to action on Feb. 22-24, as they travel to San Juan to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club.
