GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf posted a two-round total of 5-under-par 571 on Saturday and trails North Carolina by three strokes entering the final round at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate. The tournament is being played at the 7,245-yard, par 72 Grandover Resort East Course in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Hokies led after the morning’s opening round, when they carded a 2-under-par 286. Tech bettered that by one stroke in the afternoon round, recording a 3-under-par 285.
Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) has a two-round total of 9-under 135 and holds a four-stroke lead on William Register of North Carolina. Vincent shot a 6-under 66 in the first round, the best round of the first round and second-best round of the day. He followed that with a 3-under 69.
Fellow senior Trevor Cone (Concord, North Carolina) is tied for fifth place with a 3-under 141. He carded a 69 in the second round. Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina), playing near his hometown, is tied for 20th overall, at 147. Sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) is tied for 24th at 148 and junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) is tied for 53rd at 152.
Freshmen Dan Woodbury (Upton, Massachusetts) and Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Virginia) are playing at Bridgestone as individuals. Woodbury is tied for 16th at 146 and Hildebrand is tied for 67th at 156. Woodbury shot his best round in his young collegiate career with a 2-under 70 in Saturday morning’s opening round.
The Tar Heels lead at 568. The Hokies, three strokes behind UNC, leads Chattanooga and Memphis by 13 strokes and fifth place Mercer by 14 strokes. Georgia State is in sixth place at 589, South Alabama and VCU are tied for seventh at 590 and William & Mary is ninth at 592. Host UNCG is in 10th place at 594, Purdue is 11th at 598, Notre Dame is 12th at 600 and Marquette is 13th at 604.
Virginia Tech entered the tournament ranked 30th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 33rd in the Golfstat.com rankings. Eleven of the 13 teams in the field, led by No. 21 North Carolina, are ranked in the top 80 in the Golfstat.com rankings. The Hokies finished fourth in last year’s event.
The event, hosted by UNC Greensboro, is being played at the Gary Panks and David Graham-designed East Course at Grandover. The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
