Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf concludes the fall portion of its 2014-15 season this weekend at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate. The tournament will be played at the 7,245-yard, par 72 Grandover Resort East Course in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Virginia Tech enters the event ranked 30th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 33rd in the Golfstat.com rankings. Eleven of the 13 teams in the field, led by No. 21 North Carolina, are ranked in the top 80 in the Golfstat.com rankings. The Hokies finished fourth in last year’s event.
Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play in the first position for the Hokies. He is ranked 54th in the current World Amateur Golf Rankings. Vincent has two top-10 finishes this fall, including a seventh place finish at VCU.
Trevor Cone will play in the second spot for Tech. The senior from Concord, North Carolina, won two individual titles last season and is currently ranked 64th in the world. Cone is ranked 32nd by Golfstat.com and 41st in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. He was a third-team All-American a year ago. Cone has finished in the top 10 of three events this season and currently leads the team in scoring average.
Junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) will play in the third position for the Hokies. He has played in every event in his first two-plus seasons at Tech. Huge is ranked 112th by Golfweek/Sagarin and 124th by Golfstat.com. He is second on the team in scoring average and finished second at VCU earlier this fall.
Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is fourth for the Hokies. He played in seven events as a freshman, including the ACC Championship, the NCAA Auburn Regional and the NCAA Championship. He has started every match for the Hokies this fall.
Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) will play in the fifth position for the Hokies at Primland. Johnson made his season debut at VCU, tying for 23rd place, playing as an individual. He has started the last two matches and is currently fourth on the team in scoring average.
Freshmen Dan Woodbury (Upton, Massachusetts) and Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Virginia) will play at Bridgestone as individuals. This will be the second event for each player this fall.
The event, hosted by UNC Greensboro, will be played at the Gary Panks and David Graham-designed East Course at Grandover. There will be a practice round on Friday, followed by 36 holes of play on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
